RESUMO

The application of herbicides in soil has been noted for its detrimental effect on the soil microbial community, crucial for various biochemical processes. This study provides a comprehensive assessment of the impact of butisanstar and clopyralid herbicides, both individually and in combination at different dosage (recommended field dose (RFD), ½, 2 and 5-times RFD). The assessment focuses on soil basal respiration (SBR), cumulative microbial respiration (CMR), and the activities dehydrogenase (DH), catalase (CAT), urease, acid and alkaline phosphatases (Ac-P and Alk-P) enzymes, along with their variations on days 10, 30, 60, and 90 post-herbicide application. Results indicate that, although herbicides, even at lower doses of RFD, demonstrate inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and microbial respiration, they paradoxically lead to a significant enhancement in urease and phosphatase activities, even at higher doses. The inhibitory/enhancing intensity varies based on herbicide type, incubation period, and dosage. Co-application of herbicides manifests synergistic effects compared to individual applications. The most notable inhibitory effects on DH, CAT, and SBR are observed on the 30th day, coinciding with the highest activities of urease and phosphatases on the same day. The persistent inability to restore respiration and enzyme activities to initial soil (control) levels emphasizes the lasting adverse and inhibitory effects of herbicides, especially clopyralid, over the long term. It becomes apparent that soil microorganisms require an extended duration to decompose and acclimate to the presence of herbicides. Consequently, these agrochemical compounds pose a potential risk to crucial biochemical processes, such as nutrient cycling, ultimately impacting crop production.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the elemental analysis and microhardness of a bioactive material (Activa) and marginal tooth structure after storage in different media. Materials and Methods: Fifteen teeth received cervical restorations with occlusal enamel and gingival dentin margins using the tested material bonded with a universal adhesive, 5 of them on the 4 axial surfaces and the other 10 on only the 2 proximal surfaces. The first 5 teeth were sectioned into 4 restorations each, then stored in 4 different media; deionized water, Dulbecco's phosphate buffered saline (DPBS), Tris buffer, and saliva. The storage period for deionized water was 24 hours while it was 3 months for the other media. Each part was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis for different substrates/distances and the wt% of calcium, phosphorus, silica, and fluoride were calculated. The other 10 teeth were sectioned across the restoration, stored in either Tris buffer or saliva for 24 hours or 3 months, and were evaluated for microhardness of different substrates/areas. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test. Results: Enamel and dentin interfaces in the DPBS group exhibited a significant increase in calcium and phosphorus wt%. Both silica and fluoride significantly increased in tooth structure up to a distance of 75 µm in the 3-month-media groups than the immediate group. Storage media did not affect the microhardness values. Conclusions: SEM-EDS analysis suggests an ion movement between Activa and tooth structure through a universal adhesive while stored in DPBS.

BACKGROUND: Barley (H. vulgare L.) is an important cereal crop cultivated across various climates globally. Barley and its ancestor (H. vulgare subsp. spontaneum) are an economically valuable model for genetic research and improvement. Drought, among various abiotic stresses, is a substantial threat to agriculture due to its unpredictable nature and significant impact on crop yield. RESULTS: This study was conducted in both greenhouse and laboratory settings. Prior to the study, wild barley accessions were pre-selected based on their sensitivity or tolerance to drought as determined from fieldwork in the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 cropping seasons. The effects of three levels of drought stress were evaluated (control, 90-95% field capacity [FC]; mild stress, 50-55% FC; and severe stress, 25-30% FC). Several parameters were assessed, including seedling and root growth, enzymatic activity (CAT, SOD, POD), soluble protein levels, chlorophyll content, carotenoids, abaxial and adaxial stomatal density and dimensions, and relative gene expression of Dhn1, SOD, POD, and CAT. Drought stress significantly increased enzyme activities, especially at 25-30% FC, and more in the tolerant genotype. On the other hand, sensitive genotypes showed a notable increase in stomatal density. Under drought stress, there was a general decline in seedling and root growth, protein content, chlorophyll and carotenoids, and stomatal dimensions. Importantly, gene expression analysis revealed that Dhn1, SOD, POD, and CAT were upregulated under drought, with the highest expression levels observed in the drought-tolerant genotype under severe stress conditions (25-30% FC). CONCLUSIONS: Our investigation highlights the distinct morphological, physiological, biochemical, and gene-expression profiles of drought-resistant and drought-sensitive wild barley genotypes under varying degrees of drought.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the clinical performance of bulk-fill resin composite systems with different viscosities in class II cavities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 80 class II restorations were performed with a single operator in 50 patients using four different bulk-fill resin composite materials: Filtek™ Bulk Fill, Heated Filtek™ Bulk Fill, G-aenial™ BULK Injectable, and SonicFill3. A double-blinded randomized clinical trial was designed to evaluate the two-year clinical performance of the four bulk-fill composite resins using modified FDI criteria. Data were analyzed descriptively. Level of significance was set at 0.05. Differences between groups were tested using Wilcoxon-signed-rank and Mann-Whitney-U test as nonparametric tests. RESULTS: Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U, and Wilcoxon signed rank tests (p < 0.05). Eighty restorations were available for evaluation, with a survival function of 100%. No statistically significant differences were observed between the four groups regarding assessing esthetic, functional, and biological properties during different follow-up periods. CONCLUSIONS: After 2 years of clinical follow-up, the bulk-fill composite systems with different viscosities seem to be esthetically, functionally, and biologically acceptable, with a promising clinical performance in class II cavities.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and compare the marginal integrity of different restorative systems bonded to proximal gingival dentin, and determine the consistency level of the results obtained by two in vitro methods. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty molars received occluso-mesial preparations with dentin/cementum gingival margins. They were divided into three groups and restored using different restorative systems with light-cured (Adhese Universal), self-cured (Palfique universal bond), and dual-cured (Futurabond U) adhesives. The restoration/gingival dentin interfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and evaluated based on the World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria. After 10,000 thermal cycles, the marginal integrity was re-evaluated. Marginal integrity was evaluated by the percentage of continuous margin (% CM) at ×200 for SEM and as the frequency of each score within the FDI ranking. RESULTS: No significant differences were found between the restorative systems immediately, however, the system with the light-cured adhesive had the lowest marginal integrity after aging. All tested restorative systems were adversely affected by aging. A moderate inverse correlation was identified between evaluation techniques. CONCLUSION: The tested restorative systems utilizing self-cured and dual-cured adhesives may be preferable for achieving optimal marginal integrity when bonding to deep proximal margins, compared to the tested system with light-cured adhesive. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: When performing deep margin elevation, it is important to consider the adhesive system being used.

PURPOSE: To reach a consensus among obstetrics and gynecology experts on the effects of micronutrient supplementation on fertility and pregnancy to aid clinicians in decision-making and create a unified approach to managing micronutrient deficiencies in women, by performing a modified Delphi study. METHODS: A three-round modified Delphi process was conducted among a Delphi panel of 38 Egyptian experts to define recommendations regarding the role of supplementation on fertility and pregnancy in women of reproductive age. A literature review was performed and supporting evidence was graded to help guide the recommendations based on available evidence. RESULTS: A total of 62 statements were developed for discussion and voting. Out of the 62 statements, 60 statements reached expert consensus. Statements were divided into two domains. The first domain discussed the role of supplementation in fertility: optimizing natural fertility, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), in vitro fertilization/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI), unexplained infertility, and endometriosis, whereas the second domain was concerned with the role of supplementation in pregnancy during the prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal periods. CONCLUSION: In this work, a modified Delphi methodology was implemented to reach a consensus on the use of micronutrient supplementation in women of reproductive age. These recommendations can help clinicians in their practice, guide future research, and identify gaps in the market for the pharmaceutical industry. This clinical guidance can be extrapolated to similar communities.

Analyzing acetone in the exhaled breath as a biomarker has proved to be a non-invasive method to detect diabetes in humans with good accuracy. In this work, a Bi-gallate MOF doped into a chitosan (CS) matrix containing an ionic liquid (IL) was fabricated to detect acetone gas with a low detection limit of 10 ppm at an operating temperature of 60 °C and 5 V operating bias. The sensor recorded the highest response to acetone in comparison to other test gases, proving its high selectivity along with long-term stability and repeatability. The sensor also exhibited ultra-fast response and recovery times of 15 ± 0.25 s and 3 ± 0.1 s, respectively. Moreover, the sensor membrane also exhibited flexibility and ease of fabrication, making it ideal to be employed as a real-time breath analyzer.

OBJECTIVES: To provide a 3-year follow-up of previously treated patients to assess and compare the periodontal responses and clinical performance of proximal subgingival open sandwich restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-five adults participated in the study, with a combined total of 120 compound Class II cavities. These cavities had gingival margins located below the CEJ. Four different restorative materials were used to elevate the dentin/cementum gingival margins of the cavities: resin-modified glass ionomer, glass hybrid, flowable bulk-fill composite, or ion-releasing material, which were then completed with the same overlaying composite. Different periodontal and clinical evaluations, based on the criteria set by the World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria, were performed at different time intervals, including baseline, 6 months, 1, 2, and 3 years. RESULTS: The type of base material did not affect the periodontal evaluations. There were no statistically significant differences between different time intervals or base material groups in any of the evaluated FDI parameters. However, the ion-releasing material scored significantly worse in the radiographic evaluation than any of the other groups. CONCLUSIONS: All tested materials are suitable for proximal subgingival open sandwich restorations, as long as the restoration/tooth margin is at least 2-mm away from the bone crest. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Clinicians can confidently choose any of the tested materials for proximal subgingival open sandwich restorations, as they have shown good outcomes from both periodontal and clinical perspectives.

Objectives: Maxillofacial silicone is used to restore abnormalities due to congenital or acquired causes. However, the quality of silicone is far from ideal. This study was aimed at assessing the influence of the addition of cellulose nanofibers (CNFs; several nanometers in diameter and 2-5 µm long) on the physical and mechanical characteristics of maxillofacial silicone elastomers. Methods: Two CNF weight percentages (0.5% and 1%) were tested, and 180 specimens were divided into one control and two experimental groups. Each group was subdivided into six subgroups. In each subgroup, ten specimens subjected to each of the following tests: tearing strength, Shore-A hardness, tensile strength, elongation percentage, surface roughness, and color stability. The samples were additionally analyzed with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electronic microscopy (FESEM). Results: The 0.5% CNF group, compared with the control group, exhibited highly significantly greater tearing strength, elongation percentage, hardness Shore-A, and surface roughness, and substantially greater tensile strength. However, color stability did not significantly differ between groups.The 1% CNF group showed significantly greater Shore-A hardness, tear strength, color stability, and surface roughness, and insignificantly lower tensile strength and percentage elongating values, than the control group. FESEM imaging revealed good CNF dispersion. The FTIR spectra indicated that CNFs interacted with silicone through surface functional hydroxyl groups. Conclusion: Addition of 0.5 wt. % CNF to silicone elastomers increased the material's mechanical tensile strength, tear strength, elongation percentage, and hardness as long as it stayed within the acceptable range for clinical use. Surface roughness increased in direct proportion to the amount of nanofibers added. Moreover, addition of 0.5 wt. % CNF to silicone polymers had insignificant effects on color stability.

Objectives: This paper presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of the effect of different finishing and polishing (F/P) systems on surface roughness (SR) and microbial adhesion to bulk fill (BF) composites. Materials and Methods: An electronic search of 3 databases (the National Library of Medicine [MEDLINE/PubMed], Scopus, and ScienceDirect) was conducted. Only in vitro studies that evaluated SR and microbial adhesion to BF composites were included. The included studies were individually evaluated for the risk of bias following predetermined criteria. A meta-analysis of the reviewed studies was conducted to compare the SR values of both Filtek Bulk Fill and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill with and without F/P using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis software. Results: A total of 12 studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The meta-analysis showed no significant difference between Filtek Bulk Fill and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill without F/P or after F/P using multi-step systems. Different F/P systems affected the SR values, on the other hand, did not affect microbial adhesion values. Conclusion: Both Filtek Bulk Fill and Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill had comparable roughness results. Multi-step systems may be preferable for F/P of BF composites.

INTRODUCTION: Engaging with minority communities, such as immigrants and ethnic minorities, often involves adopting top-down approaches, wherein researchers and policymakers provide solutions based on their perspective. However, these approaches may not adequately address the needs and preferences of the community members, who have valuable insights and experiences to share. Therefore, community-engaged approaches, which involve collaborative partnerships between community members and researchers to identify issues, co-create solutions, and recommend policy changes, are becoming more recognized for their effectiveness and relevance. Yet, prevailing community engagement efforts often focus on easily reachable and already engaged segments of the community, sometimes overlooking the broader population. METHODS: When working with immigrant and racialized communities, we encountered difficulties in engaging the wider community through traditional researcher-led approaches. We realized that overcoming these challenges required innovative strategies rooted in community-based participatory research principles and the diffusion of innovation theory. We recognized that a nuanced understanding of the community's dynamics and preferences was crucial in shaping our approach and building trust and rapport with the community members. RESULTS: The need to bridge the gap between researcher-led initiatives and community-driven involvement has never been more pronounced. Our experience, chronicled in this article, highlights the journey of our research program with an immigrant/racialized community. This reflection enhances our comprehension of community engagement that deliberately strives to reach a larger cross-section of the community. By providing practical methods for reaching the broader community and navigating the intricacies of engagement, we aim to assist fellow researchers in conducting effective community-engaged research across various minority communities. CONCLUSION: In sharing our insights and successful strategies for community engagement, we hope to contribute to the field's knowledge. Our commitment to fostering meaningful collaboration underscores the importance of co-creating solutions that resonate with the diverse voices within these communities. Through these efforts, we envision a more inclusive and impactful approach to addressing the complex challenges faced by minority populations.

This study aimed to evaluate the periodontal responses of subgingival proximal margins elevated using different restorative materials. One hundred and twenty proximal cavities with dentin/cementum gingival margins were elevated using one of four materials and completed with the same overlaying resin composite, namely resin-modified glass ionomer, glass hybrid, flowable bulk-fill resin composite, or bioactive ionic resin. At varying time points after restoration, including baseline, six months, one, and two years, evaluations included examination of periodontal parameters and the radiographic distance between the restoration margin and bone crest. Appropriate statistical analysis was performed. The values of all periodontal parameters increased with time, although only the increases in plaque index and probing depth over time within each material group were statistically significant. There were no statistically significant differences in any of the periodontal parameters between the different materials within the same evaluation period nor between different time points or material groups in the radiographic distances between the restoration margin and bone crest. Both glass ionomer-based and resin-based materials were periodontally safe as subgingival open sandwich restorations.

A total of 20 lithium disilicate glass-ceramics (IPS e.max CAD, Ivoclar Vivadent) and 20 resin nano-ceramic (Voco Grandio Blocks) onlay restorations were performed in 20 patients using a split-mouth design to compare the two-year clinical performance of lithium disilicate and resin nano-ceramic onlay restorations. Both restorations were evaluated at baseline, one-year, and two-year clinical follow-ups based on the modified United States Public Health Service (USPHS) criteria. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests showed no statistically significant difference between Voco Grandio and IPS e.max ceramic restorations for all evaluated parameters during the different follow-up periods (p > 0.05). Cochrane's and MC-Nemar's tests indicated statistically significant differences regarding color match within the Voco Grandio group. They also indicated statistically significant differences in marginal discoloration, marginal adaptation, surface texture, and postoperative hypersensitivity within both ceramic material groups (p < 0.05). Kaplan-Meier curve indicated that the survival rate of both ceramic materials was 90%. After two years of clinical service, IPS e.max CAD and Voco Grandio onlay restorations exhibited similar clinical performance.

The utilization of biochar, derived from agricultural waste, has garnered attention as a valuable material for enhancing soil properties and serving as a substitute adsorbent for the elimination of hazardous heavy metals and organic contaminants from wastewater. In the present investigation, amide-modified biochar was synthesized via low-temperature pyrolysis of rice husk and was harnessed for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater. The resultant biochar was treated with 1-[3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl] urea to incorporate an amide group. The amide-modified biochar was characterized by employing Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. During batch experiments, the effect of various parameters, such as adsorbent dosage, metal concentration, time duration, and pH, on Cr(VI) removal was investigated. The optimal conditions for achieving maximum adsorption of Cr(VI) were observed at a pH 2, an adsorbent time of 60 min, an adsorbent dosage of 2 g/L, and a metal concentration of 100 mg/L. The percent removal efficiency of 97% was recorded for the removal of Cr(VI) under optimal conditions using amide-modified biochar. Freundlich, Langmuir, and Temkin isotherm models were utilized to calculate the adsorption data and determine the optimal fitting model. It was found that the adsorption data fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model. A kinetics study revealed that the Cr(VI) adsorption onto ABC followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The findings of this study indicate that amide-functionalized biochar has the potential to serve as an economically viable substitute adsorbent for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.

AIM: The present study aimed to evaluate the retention strength of nonretentive zirconia occlusal veneers bonded to different bonding surfaces (enamel, enamel and dentin, and enamel with composite filling) using two adhesive resin cement systems that use either organophosphate carboxylic acid or organophosphate monomers as a ceramic primer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty extracted mandibular molars were prepared to receive occlusal veneers as follows (n = 20): 1-mm reduction within enamel; 2-mm reduction within enamel and dentin; 1-mm reduction within enamel with composite filling. Each occlusal veneer was designed with an occlusal bar to aid in the retention test, then milled from a zirconia block, and sintered. Within each group, the zirconia occlusal veneers were bonded using either Duo-Link Universal or Panavia V5 (10 specimens each). All specimens were thermocycled for 5000 cycles. After the pull-off test, the retention strength was calculated for each specimen. Each specimen was examined under magnification to determine its mode of failure. Representative specimens were examined using a scanning electron microscope. Data were analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey HSD tests (P = 0.05). RESULTS: Both bonding substrate and cement type had a significant influence on retention strength values (P < 0.05). The two-way ANOVA showed a significant interaction between bonding substrate and cement type (P = 0.003). There were significant differences in the retention strength between the cements in both the enamel and enamel and dentin substrates (P < 0.05), but no significant difference between the cements in the enamel with composite filling substrate (P > 0.05). The predominant mode of failure was cement remaining principally in the restoration surface (adhesive failure), followed by cement adhesion to both the tooth and the restoration surface (mixed failure). CONCLUSIONS: Among the studied substrates, enamel was the optimal dental bonding surface. However, bonding to dentin was not a limiting factor for the retention of zirconia occlusal veneers. The resin cement using an organophosphate (Panavia V5) provided superior retention strength compared with the cement using organophosphate carboxylic acid monomer (Duo-Link Universal).

Background: Liver abscess is a life-threatening condition. Percutaneous catheter drainage (PCD) and percutaneous needle aspiration (PNA) are both minimally invasive techniques used to manage liver abscess. We aim to compare both techniques' efficacy and safety. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis involving randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from PubMed, Embase, Scopus, WOS, Cochrane, and Google scholar until July 22nd, 2022. We pooled dichotomous outcomes using risk ratio (RR) presented with a 95% confidence interval (CI) and continuous outcomes using mean difference (MD) with 95% CI. We registered our protocol with ID: CRD42022348755. Results: We included 15 RCTs with 1,626 patients. Pooled RR favored PCD (RR: 1.21 with 95% CI: 1.11, 1.31, P<0.00001) in success rate and recurrence after six months (RR: 0.41 with 95% CI: 0.22, 0.79, P=0.007). We found no difference in adverse events (RR: 2.2 with 95% CI: 0.51, 9.54, P=0.29). Pooled MD favored PCD in time to clinical improvement (MD: -1.78 with 95% CI: -2.50, -1.06, P<0.00001), time to achieve 50% reduction (MD: -2.83 with 95% CI: -3.36, -2.30], P<0.00001) and duration of antibiotic needed (MD: -2.13 with 95% CI: -3.84, -0.42, P=0.01). We found no difference in the duration of hospitalization (MD: -0.72 with 95% CI: -1.48, 0.03, P=0.06). The results were heterogeneous for all the continuous outcomes which were all measured in days. Conclusions: Our updated meta-analysis concluded that PCD is more effective than PNA in liver abscess drainage. However, evidence is still uncertain, and more high-quality trials are still required to confirm our results.

The Bacillus cereus group includes species that act as food-borne pathogens causing diarrheal and emetic symptoms. They are widely distributed and can be found in various foods. In this study, out of 550 samples of milk and cheeses, 139 (25.3%) were found to be contaminated by B. cereus sensu lato (s.l.). One isolate per positive sample was characterized by Multilocus Sequence Typing (MLST) and for the presence of ten virulence genes. Based on MLST, all isolates were classified into 73 different sequence types (STs), of which 12 isolates were assigned to new STs. Virulence genes detection revealed that 90% and 61% of the isolates harboured the nheABC and the hblCDA gene cluster, respectively. Ninety-four percent of the isolates harboured the enterotoxin genes entS and entFM; 8% of the isolates possessed the ces gene. Thirty-eight different genetic profiles were identified, suggesting a high genetic diversity. Our study clearly shows the widespread diffusion of potentially toxigenic isolates of B. cereus s.l. in milk and cheeses in the Apulia region highlighting the need to adopt GMP and HACCP procedures along every step of the milk and cheese production chain in order to reduce the public health risk linked to the consumption of foods contaminated by B. cereus s.l.

Developing new materials for energy and environment-related applications is a critical research field. In this context, organic and metal-organic framework (MOF) materials are a promising solution for sensing hazardous gases and saving energy. Herein, a flexible membrane of the zeolitic imidazole framework (ZIF-67) mixed with a conductivity-controlled chitosan polymer was fabricated for detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas at room temperature (RT). The developed sensing device remarkably enhances the detection signal of 15 ppm of H2S gas at RT (23 °C). The response recorded is significantly higher than previously reported values. The optimization of the membrane doping percentage achieved exemplary results with respect to long-term stability, repeatability, and selectivity of the target gas among an array of several gases. The fabricated gas sensor has a fast response and a recovery time of 39 s and 142 s, respectively, for 15 ppm of H2S gas at RT. While the developed sensing device operates at RT and uses low bias voltage (0.5 V), the requirement for an additional heating element has been eliminated and the necessity for external energy is minimized. These novel features of the developed sensing device could be utilized for the real-time detection of harmful gases for a healthy and clean environment.
